About the Invoice in INR

An Indian tax invoice is one of the most prescribed documents in the world, and most of the prescription is about tax. The rate splits into CGST plus SGST within a state and becomes a single IGST across state lines, every line needs an HSN code for goods or a SAC code for services, both parties’ GSTINs must appear, and the place of supply has to be stated because it is what decides the split.

The presentation is specific too. Amounts are grouped in the Indian system — 12,34,567 rather than 1,234,567 — and the total is expected in words, in lakh and crore, on the face of the invoice. A signature or digital signature is required, and invoice numbers must be consecutive and unique within a financial year.

Payment is by NEFT, RTGS or IMPS, which need the account number and an eleven-character IFSC code, or by UPI, which needs only a VPA and which now carries more transactions than every other rail combined.
