About the Invoice in EUR

A euro invoice between two businesses in different EU member states usually carries no VAT at all. Under the reverse charge, the customer accounts for the tax in their own country, and your invoice shows the net amount, both VAT numbers, and a line saying the reverse charge applies. Leaving that line off is the single most common fault on cross-border European invoices.

The other details matter too. Payment inside the euro area is by SEPA credit transfer, which needs an IBAN and — for older systems — a BIC, and which should reach the account in one working day. Numbers are written 1.234,56 in most of the bloc, the euro symbol usually trails the figure, and dates are day-month-year.

Where VAT is charged, the rate follows the country of supply: 19% in Germany, 20% in France, 21% in the Netherlands and Spain, 22% in Italy, 23% in Ireland and Poland, 27% in Hungary. This builder starts at 21% and lets you set whichever applies.

Frequently asked questions

For a B2B supply of services to a business in another member state, usually not — the reverse charge applies and the customer accounts for the VAT. For B2C, and for some specific supplies such as land and events, different rules apply.
