The Late Payment Reminder Generator writes the firm message and works out the claim — statutory interest accruing daily from the due date plus the fixed recovery cost — with the legal basis quoted, which is what turns a request into a claim.
Once an invoice is properly late, the message changes from a question to a statement, and it should carry something the earlier ones did not: the money that has accrued since the due date. In the UK and the EU you have a statutory right to interest and a fixed recovery cost on a late commercial debt whether or not your terms mention it — and most suppliers never claim either.
This writes the firm reminder and works out the claim. Interest accrues daily from the due date at 8% above the Bank of England base rate under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998, or 8 points above the ECB reference rate under Directive 2011/7/EU, plus a fixed sum of £40, £70 or £100 depending on the size of the debt — or €40 in the EU.
The message quotes the basis, states the amount now claimed, gives a date, and says what happens next. Quoting the Act is what turns a polite request into a claim somebody has to deal with, and it is the single most effective change most small suppliers can make to how they chase.
Daily from the due date, at the right rate.
£40, £70 or £100 by debt size, or €40 in the EU.
Naming the Act is what makes it a claim rather than a request.
Not "as soon as possible", which is not a deadline.
Only threaten what you will actually do.
Interest runs daily from the date it fell due.
UK statutory, EU directive, or your own contractual rate.
Principal, interest to date and the fixed recovery cost.
A date, not "as soon as possible" — a deadline with no date is not one.
And only say what you are actually prepared to do.
In the UK and the EU, yes, on a commercial debt — the right is statutory and applies regardless of what the contract says. Elsewhere it usually depends on the contract, so check before you claim.
In the UK, £40 for debts under £1,000, £70 for £1,000 to £9,999.99 and £100 for £10,000 or more, per invoice. In the EU it is €40 per invoice. It is in addition to the interest, not instead of it.
Less than most people fear, and less than being paid ninety days late does. Many suppliers state the entitlement and then waive it on payment, which makes the point without collecting on it.
Daily on the outstanding amount from the day after it fell due until payment. At 8% above a 4.75% base rate, a £5,000 invoice accrues about £1.75 a day.
Only what you will actually do. An empty threat you do not follow through on costs you every subsequent deadline. Referral for recovery, a letter before action, or suspension of work are all real options — pick one you mean.
