About the Invoice Metadata Extractor

Every PDF carries a record of itself: who made it, with which software, when it was created and when it was last changed. On an invoice that record occasionally matters a great deal. An invoice dated March that was created in June, or produced by an image editor rather than an accounting system, is worth a second look.

Drop a PDF and this reads the document information dictionary and the XMP metadata: title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation and modification dates, the PDF version, the number of pages and their sizes, whether it is encrypted, and whether it carries a text layer at all.

It also says what it cannot tell you, which is most things: metadata is trivially editable, an absent field means nothing, and a matching date proves only that the dates match. Use it as one signal among several, not as evidence. The file is read in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

No. It can raise a question — a creation date long after the invoice date, a producer that is an image editor, a modification date after it was sent — but every field can be edited, and plenty of honest invoices have odd metadata.
