About the Invoice in ZAR

South African VAT is 15%, and SARS is prescriptive about what a tax invoice must contain. A full tax invoice — required above a set value — needs the words "tax invoice", "VAT invoice" or "invoice", your name, address and VAT registration number, the recipient’s name, address and VAT number, a serial number, the date, a description of the goods or services, the quantity, and the value and tax shown in one of the prescribed ways.

Below that value an abridged tax invoice is allowed, which omits the recipient’s details. Above it, an invoice missing the recipient’s VAT number does not support their input tax claim, which is why a South African customer will send it back rather than pay it.

Payment is by EFT to an account number and a branch code, and most South African banks now resolve the branch code from the account automatically. The rand is written R1 234,56 with a space as the thousands separator and a comma as the decimal mark, though the English convention is also widely used.
