About the Invoice in CAD

Canadian sales tax is the part that catches people out, because the rate depends on the customer’s province rather than yours. Five per cent federal GST applies everywhere; five provinces instead charge a harmonised HST of 13% or 15% that replaces both; British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba add a separate provincial sales tax on top of GST; and Quebec charges QST alongside it.

A registered business must show its GST/HST registration number on any invoice over a small threshold, and the customer cannot claim an input tax credit without it — which makes a missing number the fastest way to have an invoice returned.

Payment is by EFT, which needs a three-digit institution number, a five-digit transit number and the account number, or by Interac e-Transfer for smaller amounts. Dates are commonly written year-month-day in the ISO form, which sidesteps the fact that Canada uses both of the other orders depending on who is reading.
