The Image Blur Tool blurs a whole picture or just a region you drag over, using a real separable Gaussian rather than the cheap box blur most web tools use. For redaction it is explicit about the limits: a light blur can be computationally reversed, so it tells you when the radius is too small to be relied on.
Blurring has two quite different uses. One is aesthetic — softening a background so the subject stands out, or producing a backdrop for text. The other is redaction: hiding a face, a licence plate, an address or a name in a screenshot.
Both are here, with a real separable Gaussian blur rather than the cheap box blur most web tools use, so the result is smooth instead of blocky. For redaction it is worth being careful: a light blur can sometimes be computationally reversed, so use a large radius or switch to pixelation with big blocks when the thing being hidden actually matters.
Two separable passes with a proper bell-curve kernel, so the result is smooth rather than boxy.
Drag a box over a face, a name or a plate and leave the rest of the image untouched.
The page says plainly that a weak blur is reversible and points you at pixelation when it actually matters.
Transparency is blurred along with colour, so cut-out images keep soft edges instead of hard ones.
Screenshots being redacted are exactly the files that should not be sent anywhere, and here none are.
A photo or a screenshot.
Blur everything, or drag a box over just the part that needs hiding.
A few pixels softens; 20 or more genuinely obscures.
The blur is baked into the pixels, so it cannot be turned off later.
Only at a large radius. A light blur is a reversible mathematical operation and text has been recovered from weak blurs before. For anything that matters, use a heavy radius or solid pixelation.
A blur that weights nearby pixels by a bell curve rather than averaging them equally. It looks natural instead of boxy, which is why every editor uses it.
You can drag a region and blur outside it, which works when the subject is roughly rectangular. A true subject cut-out needs the Background Remover first.
It usually makes JPEG and WebP files smaller, because blurred areas have less high-frequency detail to encode.
