Quick Tool Overview

The Duotone Generator maps image brightness onto a ramp between two colours you choose, which is what unifies a set of mismatched photographs into one visual language. Presets cover the combinations that work, but the two colour pickers are the point — a duotone in your own brand colours is yours rather than a filter.

About the Duotone Generator

A duotone maps the brightness of an image onto a gradient between two colours: dark pixels take the first, light pixels take the second, and everything in between is interpolated. The result unifies any set of photographs into one visual language.

That is why it has become the standard treatment for brand imagery — a page of duotoned photographs looks designed rather than assembled, however mismatched the originals were. Presets cover the combinations that work, but the point of the tool is the two colour pickers, because a duotone in your own brand colours is what makes it yours rather than a filter.

Key features of the Duotone Generator

Your own colours

Both ends of the ramp are pickers, so the treatment matches a brand palette rather than a preset.

Midpoint balance

Shift where the ramp crosses over to weight the image toward the shadow colour or the highlight one.

Blend back the original

Mixing some source colour in softens the effect from a statement into a grade.

Working presets

A set of combinations that actually hold together, as starting points rather than destinations.

Explains why it fails

Two colours of similar lightness produce mud, and the page says so instead of leaving you guessing.

How to use the Duotone Generator

  1. 1

    Load the photo

Images with a clear tonal range work best; very flat ones have nothing to map.

  2. 2

    Pick the two colours

One for the shadows, one for the highlights. High contrast between them reads strongest.

  3. 3

    Adjust the balance

Shift where the midpoint falls to weight the image toward one colour or the other.

  4. 4

    Blend if you want subtlety

Mixing some original colour back in softens the effect considerably.

Frequently asked questions

A dark, saturated colour for the shadows and a bright, light one for the highlights. Two colours of similar lightness produce a flat, muddy result — the contrast between them is what carries the image.
