Quick Tool Overview

Tint Image lays a single colour over a photograph at a strength and blend mode you choose. The mode is what separates a grade from mud: overlay and soft light keep the contrast, multiply darkens as it tints, screen lightens. A range control restricts the tint to shadows, midtones or highlights for split-toning.

About the Tint Image

Tinting is the quiet cousin of the duotone: one colour laid over an image at a strength low enough that the photograph survives it.

What separates a good tint from a muddy one is the blend mode. A normal overlay at low opacity washes out the contrast; multiply darkens as it tints, which suits warm colours; screen lightens, which suits cool ones; and overlay and soft light keep the tonal range intact while pushing the colour, which is what a grade actually wants. All are available, along with a monotone mode that maps luminance onto the colour entirely.

Key features of the Tint Image

Real blend modes

Multiply, screen, overlay and soft light, not a single opacity slider that washes out the contrast.

Range restriction

Tint only the shadows or only the highlights, which is how split-toning works and is far subtler than tinting everything.

Monotone mode

Maps luminance onto the colour entirely when you want the full effect rather than a wash.

Live preview

Every colour and mode change redraws immediately, which is the only way to judge a grade.

Explains the modes

The page says which mode suits which colour, so the choice is informed rather than trial and error.
