A head-and-shoulders shot works best · nothing is uploaded
The Profile Picture Maker previews an avatar the way it is actually seen — as circles at 400, 128, 48 and 32 pixels, side by side — while you position and zoom the face. The export is a square, because that is what platforms want to receive and they apply the circular mask themselves.
Almost every platform stores a square profile picture and displays it as a circle at several sizes, most of them small. The two things that go wrong are a face positioned for the square rather than the circle, and detail that vanishes at 40 pixels.
Both are addressed here by previewing the result the way it will actually be seen: as circles at 400, 128, 48 and 32 pixels, side by side, with the circular crop applied. Position and zoom the face, add a ring or a background if you want one, and the export is a square PNG or JPEG at the resolution you choose — square, because that is what platforms want to receive.
32 and 48 pixel circles are what a comment thread shows, and they are where most avatars fail.
You judge the circle but download the square, which is what every platform expects.
Fill the circle with the face rather than accepting a centre crop of the whole photo.
A plain or blurred background makes a face read faster at small sizes.
Defaults to 400 by 400, which covers every platform without being needlessly large.
A head-and-shoulders shot works best.
Fill the circle with the face; a distant subject disappears at small sizes.

Platforms want a square file and apply the circle themselves.
400 by 400 covers almost every platform; 800 by 800 is a safe upper bound for high-density screens. Larger is resized down on upload anyway.
A square. Every platform applies its own circular mask, and uploading a pre-cut circle just means transparent corners that get filled with white.
Usually the face is too small in the frame. At 32 pixels only the largest features survive, so the face needs to fill most of the circle.
Only if the original has a distracting one. A plain or blurred background makes a face read faster at small sizes, which is the whole job of an avatar.
