Image Hash Generator

Generate cryptographic and perceptual hashes of an image.

Drop one image here, or two to compare them

Quick Tool Overview

The Image Hash Generator produces both kinds of image fingerprint. SHA-256 hashes the exact bytes, which proves a file is unaltered but changes completely if a single pixel does. A perceptual hash fingerprints what the image looks like, so it survives resizing and re-compression — and the Hamming distance between two says how alike they are.

About the Image Hash Generator

There are two quite different reasons to hash an image, and they need two different kinds of hash.

A cryptographic hash such as SHA-256 fingerprints the exact bytes, which proves a file has not been altered — but change a single pixel, or re-save it, and the hash is completely different. A perceptual hash instead fingerprints what the image looks like: it survives resizing, re-compression, minor colour shifts and small crops, so two versions of the same photograph produce nearly identical hashes. Both are generated here, along with the Hamming distance tool for comparing perceptual hashes.

Key features of the Image Hash Generator

Both hash types

Cryptographic for exact verification, perceptual for recognising the same picture at a different size.

Survives re-encoding

The perceptual hash is computed from a tiny greyscale version, so quality changes barely move it.

Compare two images

Add a second file and the Hamming distance between the fingerprints is calculated directly.

Explains the thresholds

The page says what distance means "same image" and what means "different", so the number is usable.

Computed locally

Hashing runs in your browser, so verifying a confidential file does not involve sending it anywhere.

How to use the Image Hash Generator

  1. 1

    Load an image

Any file. Both hash types are calculated at once.

  2. 2

    Read the file hash

SHA-256 of the exact bytes, for verifying a file has not changed.

  3. 3

    Read the perceptual hash

A 64-bit fingerprint of what the image looks like, which survives resizing.

  4. 4

    Compare two images

Add a second file to see the Hamming distance between their perceptual hashes.

Frequently asked questions

A fingerprint of what an image looks like rather than of its bytes. It is computed from a tiny greyscale version, so resizing, re-compressing and minor edits barely change it.
