The PNG to JPG Converter re-encodes a lossless PNG as a JPEG, which for photographic content is usually a five to tenfold saving. The one decision to make is what fills the transparency, since JPEG has no alpha channel — white by default, any colour you like. The quality slider shows the resulting file size as you move it.
PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is why a photograph saved as PNG is often five to ten times larger than it needs to be. JPEG throws away detail the eye does not miss, and for photographic content the difference in file size is dramatic.
The one thing to decide before converting is what happens to transparency, because JPEG has none. Transparent areas have to be filled with something, and the default here is white — but you can pick any colour, which matters when the image will sit on a dark page. The quality slider shows the resulting size as you move it, so you can stop at the point where the saving stops being worth it rather than guessing at a number.
The output size updates as you drag the quality slider, so you stop where the saving stops being worth it.
Transparent areas are filled with a colour you pick, not silently with white, which matters on dark layouts.
The tool reports when the JPEG comes out larger, which happens with flat graphics and screenshots that PNG compresses very well.
The converted file is exactly what you made, with nothing added and nothing to sign up for.
Conversion runs on a canvas in your browser, so large files are limited by your machine rather than by a server.
Drop the file in or click to choose it. Its current size is shown immediately.
Any transparent areas need a colour, since JPEG cannot store transparency.
Around 85 is the usual sweet spot; the output size updates as you drag.
Save the converted file, with the size saving shown beside it.
Yes, JPEG is lossy by design. At quality 85 or above the loss is invisible on photographs. On flat graphics, logos and screenshots with text it shows as fringing, and those should stay PNG.
JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose. White is the default; pick something else if the image will sit on a coloured page.
That happens with flat graphics and screenshots, which PNG compresses extremely well. JPEG is only smaller for photographic content with gradual tonal change.
Only your device memory. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no server limit and no queue — very large images just take a second or two longer.
