Quick Tool Overview

Straighten Image corrects a tilted horizon or a crooked scan with a slider that works in tenths of a degree, plus a grid overlay to judge against. Small rotations leave wedge-shaped gaps at the corners, so the tool can crop inward to the largest clean rectangle automatically and shows you exactly what that costs.

About the Straighten Image

A horizon that is two degrees off is the sort of thing you cannot unsee once you have noticed it, and phone photographs are full of them. Scanned documents have the same problem for a different reason.

The slider works in tenths of a degree, which is the resolution this job actually needs, and a grid overlay gives you something straight to judge against. Rotating by a small angle leaves wedge-shaped gaps at the corners, so the tool offers to crop inward to the largest rectangle that contains no gap — the standard fix, applied automatically, with the resulting size shown so you know what it costs.

Key features of the Straighten Image

Tenth-of-a-degree control

The correction most photos need is under three degrees, so the slider resolution is where the job actually happens.

Alignment grid

A grid overlay gives you something genuinely straight to line the horizon or page edge against.

Automatic corner crop

Trims to the largest rectangle containing no gap, which is the standard fix, with the resulting size reported.

Or keep the corners

Turn the crop off and fill the wedges with transparency, a colour or a blurred copy instead.

Honest about the cost

The percentage of frame lost to the crop is shown, so a large correction is a visible decision rather than a surprise.

How to use the Straighten Image

  1. 1

    Load the crooked photo

Any tilted photograph, scan or screenshot.

  2. 2

    Turn on the grid

The overlay gives you a straight reference to line the horizon or page edge up against.

  3. 3

    Nudge the angle

The slider moves in tenths of a degree; most corrections are under three degrees.

  4. 4

    Crop and download

Let it trim to the largest clean rectangle, or keep the corners and fill them.

Frequently asked questions

Rotating a rectangle leaves triangular gaps at the corners. Cropping to the largest rectangle that avoids them is the standard fix, and it costs a few percent of the image for every degree of correction.
