The YAML to XML Converter writes well-formed XML from YAML, turning lists into repeated elements or a wrapped parent, @keys into attributes, and illegal key names into safe ones.
Modern tooling speaks YAML; plenty of enterprise systems, SOAP endpoints and legacy importers still demand XML. Writing the XML by hand is a chore, and the details that break it — a key starting with a digit, a list that needs repeating tags, a value containing an ampersand — are exactly the ones easiest to miss.
Paste YAML and get well-formed XML. Choose the root element name and what list entries are called, repeat the key for each entry or wrap lists in a parent element, and keep or drop the <?xml?> declaration. Keys beginning with @ become attributes and a #text key becomes element text, matching the convention the XML to YAML tool reads. Characters that must be escaped are escaped, and keys that are not legal XML names are rewritten rather than producing a broken document.
Choose the root element and what list entries are called.
Repeat the key per entry, or wrap entries in a parent element.
@id becomes id="…" and #text becomes the element text.
Invalid tag names are rewritten and & < > are escaped in text and attributes.
Two spaces, four spaces, or a single line for transport.
A mapping at the top level — XML needs a single root to hang everything from.
For example root and item, or invoice and line.
Repeat the key per entry, or wrap the entries in a parent element.
Indented for reading, or minified to one line.
An XML document has exactly one root element, so it needs a named structure to start from. A top-level list is wrapped in the root element you name, and a single scalar cannot be converted at all.
Prefix the key with @: a key "@id" with value 7 becomes id="7" on the element. A "#text" key becomes the element’s text content.
Names cannot start with a digit or contain spaces and most punctuation. Those characters become underscores and a leading digit gets an underscore in front, so the output is always well-formed.
Yes, in both text and attribute values, so a value containing markup characters cannot break the document.
