Quick Tool Overview

The Space Counter breaks the whitespace in a text down into ordinary spaces, double spaces, tabs and line breaks, and separately finds the invisible ones — non-breaking spaces and other Unicode spaces that look identical on screen but behave differently everywhere else.

About the Space Counter

Whitespace is the part of a document nobody proofreads, which is why double spaces after full stops survive into published copy and why a stray tab breaks a tab-separated import. This counter makes all of it visible: how many ordinary spaces, how many are doubled, how many tabs, how many line breaks.

It also finds the whitespace you cannot see. Non-breaking spaces look identical to ordinary ones but behave differently in every layout engine, and they arrive constantly in text copied from web pages. They are counted and flagged separately here, along with the other exotic Unicode spaces, so you know exactly what is in the string before you send it somewhere that cares.

Key features of the Space Counter

Double spaces found and counted

Runs of two or more spaces are counted and located — the most common formatting fault in pasted copy.

Hidden spaces exposed

Non-breaking spaces and other Unicode spaces are flagged separately, because a search for a normal space will never find them.

Tabs called out

A tab in what should be space-delimited data is a specific, fixable fault, so tabs get their own count.

Leading and trailing whitespace

Space at the start and end of lines is counted, which is what usually survives a copy-paste and breaks a comparison.

Whitespace share of the text

The percentage of the document that is whitespace puts the raw counts in context.

How to use the Space Counter

  1. 1

    Paste your text

A document, a data row or anything you suspect has whitespace problems.

  2. 2

    Read the breakdown

Ordinary spaces, tabs, line breaks and total whitespace are counted separately.

  3. 3

    Check the double spaces

Runs of two or more spaces are counted and located, which is the most common formatting fault in pasted text.

  4. 4

    Look for hidden spaces

Non-breaking and other Unicode spaces are flagged, since they look identical to a normal space on screen.

Frequently asked questions

One. The two-space convention comes from monospaced typewriters, and every current style guide — Chicago, AP, APA and MLA — specifies a single space. Proportional fonts already add the extra visual gap.
