Speech to Text gives you browser dictation with live results and spoken punctuation commands. It is the one tool here that is not fully local — Chrome sends the audio to a remote service for recognition — and the page says so before you press record rather than after.
Dictation is faster than typing for a first draft — most people speak at three times their typing speed — and it produces different writing, usually looser and more conversational, which is often exactly what a first draft should be.
This uses your browser's speech recognition. One thing must be said plainly: in Chrome and most Chromium browsers, that API sends your audio to a remote service for processing. Every other tool on this site runs entirely in your browser, and this one cannot, so do not dictate anything confidential into it. Within that limit it works well: continuous recognition, live interim results, spoken punctuation commands, and a choice of recognition language.
The audio goes to a remote service, and this page says so plainly instead of leaving you to find out.
"Full stop", "comma" and "new paragraph" insert marks rather than being transcribed as words.
Text appears as you speak, in grey until the engine settles on it.
English (UK) versus English (US) makes a substantial difference to accuracy.
The result stays in a normal text box, so you can fix it before copying.

Recognition accuracy depends heavily on getting the language and regional accent right.
Text appears as you talk, with interim results shown in grey until confirmed.
Saying "full stop", "comma" or "new paragraph" inserts the mark rather than the words.
No, and this page says so rather than hiding it. Chrome's implementation of the Web Speech API sends audio to a Google service for recognition. Do not dictate confidential material into it.
Chrome, Edge and Safari support the Web Speech API. Firefox does not enable it by default. On mobile, the built-in keyboard dictation is usually more accurate than this API.
Say it. "Full stop", "comma", "question mark", "new line" and "new paragraph" are all recognised and inserted as marks rather than transcribed as words.
Usually the language setting. Choosing English (UK) rather than English (US) makes a substantial difference to a British speaker, and vice versa. Background noise and a distant microphone are the next two causes.
