About the Upside Down Text

Upside down text works by substitution rather than rotation. Unicode contains characters that happen to look like inverted letters — the turned a, the turned e, the inverted question mark — and replacing each letter with its lookalike, then reversing the order, produces text that reads correctly when the screen is turned over.

Every lowercase letter, every digit and the common punctuation marks have a usable equivalent. Capitals are patchier, so those are approximated with the closest available shape and the substitutions are listed. Brackets and quotation marks are mirrored rather than merely flipped, which is what makes a flipped sentence look right instead of subtly wrong.

Key features of the Upside Down Text

Brackets properly mirrored

A flipped opening bracket becomes a closing one, which is what makes the result look right.

Full lowercase and digit coverage

Every lowercase letter and digit has a genuine turned form in Unicode.

Approximations listed

Capitals with no true inverted form are substituted and the substitution is named.

Reversible

Paste flipped text back in and the tool recognises the substitutions and restores the original.

Wide device support

The turned letters come from the IPA extensions block, which almost every device font includes.

  3. 3

Characters with no true inverted form are listed with what was used instead.

  4. 4

    Copy it anywhere

It is plain Unicode, so it works in any app or field.

Frequently asked questions

Each character is swapped for a Unicode character shaped like its inverted form, and the whole string is reversed so it reads left to right when the screen is turned over. Nothing is rotated — the shapes already exist.
