About the Text to Slug

A slug is the readable part of a URL, the words after the last slash. Paste a headline and this turns it into one: lowercased, accents flattened, punctuation dropped and words joined with a hyphen.

It handles the details a hand-typed slug usually gets wrong. Accented letters become their plain equivalents, so a title with Creme Brulee in it produces creme-brulee instead of a percent-encoded mess. An ampersand becomes the word and, currency and percent symbols are spelled out, and repeated separators are collapsed rather than left doubled up.

Cap the length and the cut lands on a word boundary rather than mid-word. Drop filler words such as a, the and of to keep the slug tight, or prefix the date for a dated archive. Paste several titles, one per line, and you get one slug per line back, which is what you want when you are planning a content calendar rather than a single post.

Key features of the Text to Slug

Accents flattened properly

Accented letters become their plain equivalents, so a title containing Creme Brulee produces creme-brulee instead of a percent-encoded mess.

Symbols spelled out

An ampersand becomes "and", and currency and percent symbols are written as words rather than dropped silently.

Length capped on a word boundary

Set a maximum length and the cut lands between words instead of slicing one in half.

Optional stop-word removal

Drop filler such as "a", "the" and "of" to keep the slug tight, or prefix the date for a dated archive.

Bulk conversion

Paste several titles, one per line, and get one slug per line back — what you want when planning a content calendar.

How to use the Text to Slug

  1. 1

    Paste your title

One title per line. A whole list of planned posts works as well as a single headline.

  2. 2

    Choose the separator and case

Hyphens and lowercase are the standard. Underscores, full stops and other cases are there if a system demands them.

  3. 3

    Trim it down

Set a maximum length and optionally drop filler words so the slug stays short and readable.

  4. 4

    Check the preview and copy

The preview shows the finished URL against your domain. Copy the slug or download the whole batch.

Frequently asked questions

Hyphens. Google has said for years that it reads a hyphen as a word separator and an underscore as a joiner, so my-blog-post is read as three words while my_blog_post can be read as one. Hyphen is the default here for that reason.
