About the Zalgo Text Generator

Zalgo text is made by stacking Unicode combining marks — the accents that normally sit on a single letter — many deep on each character. Because combining marks have no width of their own, they pile above and below the line and spill into the text around them, which produces the characteristic corrupted look.

The name comes from a 2004 internet horror meme, and the effect is used for glitch aesthetics, horror-themed posts and creepypasta. Intensity is adjustable in both directions independently, so you can have marks only above, only below, or both, from a light disturbance to full corruption. Be aware that heavy Zalgo genuinely breaks layouts by overflowing its line, which is part of the appeal and also why some platforms filter it.

Key features of the Zalgo Text Generator

Independent direction control

Marks above, below or through, each with its own intensity, rather than one blunt slider.

Live preview of the overflow

Heavy settings spill well outside the line — you see that before you paste it somewhere.

Explains why sites reject it

Overflowing text can cover navigation, so many platforms filter combining marks beyond a limit.

Fully reversible

The base characters are untouched, so stripping the marks restores the original exactly.

Intensity capped sensibly

Enough for the effect without producing text that visibly slows a browser to render.

How to use the Zalgo Text Generator

  1. 1

    Type your text

A word or a short phrase — Zalgo is unreadable at length.

  2. 2

    Set the intensity

How many marks stack above, below and through each character.

  3. 3

    Preview the overflow

Heavy settings spill well outside the line, which is the effect and also the problem.

  4. 4

    Copy and paste it

It is plain Unicode, though some platforms strip or reject it.

Frequently asked questions

Unicode combining marks are zero-width characters that attach to the character before them. Stacking dozens on one letter makes them pile far above and below the line, overlapping whatever is around them.
