The Punctuation Checker finds the mechanical faults a machine can genuinely catch: spaces before commas, unbalanced brackets and quotes, doubled marks and sentences that never end. All of them are nearly invisible when you are reading your own text.
Punctuation faults are mechanical, which makes them the one part of proofreading a machine can genuinely do well. A space before a comma, a missing closing bracket, two full stops in a row, a sentence that never ends — all of them are findable by rule, and all of them are close to invisible when you are reading your own text.
This finds them. Spacing around every mark is checked against the standard convention. Brackets and quotation marks are matched, so an unclosed pair is reported with its position. Doubled marks, missing sentence-final punctuation, spaces before punctuation, missing spaces after it, and inconsistent quotation styles are all flagged, with the option to fix everything in one pass.
Nesting is tracked, so an unmatched pair is reported with where the mismatch starts.
No space before a comma, one space after — the faults pasted text carries in constantly.
Whether your text follows British or American quote punctuation, rather than one being enforced.
Every mechanical fault can be corrected together, since none of them is a judgement call.
The page says which comma rules a tool can genuinely check, and that placement is mostly judgement.
A document, an article or an email.
Each fault is shown with its position and the convention it breaks.
Unmatched brackets and quotation marks are counted and located.
The mechanical faults can all be corrected in one pass.
One. Every current style guide — Chicago, AP, APA and MLA — specifies a single space. The two-space rule comes from monospaced typewriters and has not been correct for decades.
American style puts commas and full stops inside the closing quote always. British style puts them inside only when they belong to the quoted material. The tool reports which convention your text is using rather than enforcing one.
By counting openings and closings and tracking their nesting, so it can report not just that a bracket is unmatched but where the mismatch begins.
Only in the specific cases a rule can see — before a coordinating conjunction joining two clauses, and after a long introductory phrase. Comma placement is largely a judgement call, and a tool claiming otherwise is overstating what it does.
