Remove Numbers

Delete digits from text, with the option to keep dates and prices.

Quick Tool Overview

Remove Numbers strips digits out of a text, with enough control to be useful for two very different jobs: cleaning a corpus before analysis, and taking identifiers out of a document before it is shared. Dates, prices and digits inside words can each be protected.

About the Remove Numbers

Numbers get stripped for two very different reasons. One is data preparation — a word frequency count or a readability score is skewed by a document full of figures, so the digits come out first. The other is anonymisation: removing account numbers, reference codes and identifiers from a document before it is shared.

Because those two jobs want different things, the removal is adjustable. Whole numbers can go while numbers inside words such as "H2O" and "B2B" stay. Dates and prices can be protected so a document keeps its meaning. Removed numbers can be deleted outright or replaced with a placeholder, which is what you want when the fact that a number was there still matters.

Key features of the Remove Numbers

Standalone numbers only

Keep the digits inside "H2O" and "B2B" while removing the figures that stand on their own.

Date and price protection

Common date formats and currency amounts are recognised and left in place, so the document still reads correctly.

Replace with a placeholder

Swap each number for a marker such as [number] when the fact that a figure was there still matters.

Spacing cleaned up

The gaps left behind are collapsed on request, so removing numbers does not leave double spaces everywhere.

Counts what it removed

How many numbers went and how many digits they contained, reported with the result.

How to use the Remove Numbers

A report, a transcript or a document you are preparing to share.

Standalone numbers only, or digits anywhere including inside words such as "H2O".

  3. 3

    Protect what should stay

Dates and prices can be preserved so the document still reads correctly.

  4. 4

    Pick a replacement

Delete the numbers, or swap each for a placeholder such as [number] when the gap should be visible.

Frequently asked questions

No. "Twenty-five" is a word, not a digit, so it is left alone. The tool works on numerals; removing spelled-out numbers reliably would require understanding the sentence.
