Turn plain typing into proper typography — curly quotes, real dashes.
The Text Beautifier converts typewriter marks into typographic ones: straight quotes become curly with the correct direction, double hyphens become em dashes, three dots become an ellipsis, and common fractions become single characters. It is the exact reverse of Clean Text.
Typing produces typewriter marks. Publishing needs typographic ones. The straight apostrophe you type is a prime symbol; the correct character is a right single quotation mark. Three full stops are not an ellipsis. A double hyphen is not an em dash. Readers do not consciously notice the difference, but the page looks amateur without it.
This applies the conversions a typesetter would. Straight quotes become curly ones with the correct opening and closing direction, including inside contractions where the apostrophe must curl the right way. Double hyphens become em dashes and number ranges get en dashes. Three dots become a proper ellipsis. Fractions become single characters, multiplication signs replace the letter x between numbers, and degree symbols replace the typed circle. It is the exact opposite of Clean Text, which straightens all of this back out for code.
Opening and closing marks are worked out from context, including apostrophes inside contractions and leading elisions like '90s.
A range gets an en dash and a sentence break gets an em dash — the most common typographic error in published text.
Three full stops become the single ellipsis character, which spaces correctly and never breaks across a line.
Common fractions, multiplication signs between numbers and degree symbols all get their proper characters.
The page is explicit that curly quotes break code and CSV, and points at Clean Text for the reverse.
A draft typed with ordinary keyboard characters.
Quotes, dashes, ellipses, fractions and symbols are each their own switch.
Opening and closing marks are worked out from context, including apostrophes inside words.
The result is ready for a page, a print layout or an ebook.
On anything that will be read by a machine. Curly quotes break code, CSV files and search matching, so keep them out of anything technical. Clean Text does the reverse conversion when you need to strip them back out.
By context. A quote after whitespace or an opening bracket is an opening mark; one after a letter or punctuation is a closing mark. Apostrophes inside words such as "don't" and leading elisions such as "'90s" are handled as special cases.
An en dash (–) marks a range: pages 10–20. An em dash (—) marks a break in a sentence — like this one. Typing a hyphen for either is the most common typographic error in published text.
The common ones. 1/2, 1/4, 3/4 and a few others have single Unicode characters and are converted; unusual fractions have no character and are left as typed.
