Turn decimal character codes back into readable text.
Decimal to Text turns a row of numbers back into characters, and also recognises HTML numeric entities in both decimal and hexadecimal form — which makes it the tool for reading an obfuscated email address out of page source.
A row of numbers such as 72 101 108 108 111 is the most common form a character code puzzle takes, and the most common thing to find in a log file when something has dumped codes instead of characters. This turns them back into text.
Separators are flexible — spaces, commas, semicolons and line breaks all work — and HTML numeric entities such as A and A are recognised and decoded too, which is useful when you are trying to read an obfuscated email address out of page source. Values above 127 are read as Unicode code points, so accented characters and emoji decode correctly rather than failing at the edge of the ASCII table.
Both A and A forms are recognised, which is how addresses are hidden in page source.
Values above 127 decode as code points, so accented letters and emoji come back correctly.
Codes above the Unicode maximum, or inside the surrogate range, are reported rather than producing a broken character.
Spaces, commas, semicolons and line breaks all work in the same input.
Zero-padded runs with no separator can be decoded by giving the width.
Separated by spaces, commas or line breaks, or as HTML numeric entities.
Code points by default; switch to byte mode when the numbers are UTF-8 bytes.
A solid run of digits can be split into equal groups when the codes were zero padded.
The decoded characters appear immediately, with any out-of-range values reported.
Yes, both the decimal form A and the hexadecimal form A. That makes it useful for reading an email address that has been obfuscated in page source.
They are read as Unicode code points, so 233 gives é and 128512 gives an emoji. ASCII stops at 127, but the numbering continues and this tool follows it.
Either it is above 1,114,111, which is the highest valid Unicode code point, or it falls in the surrogate range reserved for UTF-16 encoding. Both are reported rather than producing a broken character.
Only if they were zero padded to a fixed width. Without padding there is no way to tell whether "6597" is two codes or four, so the tool asks for a width rather than guessing.
