Text Formatter

Apply consistent structure to a document in one pass.

Quick Tool Overview

The Text Formatter applies one consistent set of structural rules to a whole document — paragraph separation, sentence spacing, list markers, heading spacing and line width. It changes only whitespace and markers, never your words, so a draft assembled from several sources ends up looking like one person wrote it.

About the Text Formatter

A document assembled from several sources is never consistently formatted. One section has a blank line between paragraphs and another does not. Some sentences have two spaces after the full stop and some have one. The bullet list uses asterisks in one place and hyphens in another. Individually trivial, collectively a mess.

This applies one set of structural rules to the whole thing. Paragraph separation is normalised to your choice of a blank line or a single break. Sentence spacing becomes uniform. List markers are unified. Line width is enforced or removed. Headings get consistent space above and below. Each rule is a switch, and the result is a document that looks like one person wrote it.

Key features of the Text Formatter

One paragraph rule throughout

Blank line or single break, applied everywhere, so the document stops switching between the two.

Sentence spacing normalised

One space after a full stop, as every current style guide specifies — or two, if a house style insists.

List markers unified

Asterisks, hyphens and bullets all become the one marker you choose.

Heading spacing

Consistent space above and below anything the tool recognises as a heading, including Markdown ones.

Words never touched

Only whitespace, line breaks and markers change, so the text itself comes through exactly as written.

  3. 3

    Normalise the details

  4. 4

    Set the line width

Wrap to a fixed width for plain text, or remove hard wrapping so the text reflows.

Frequently asked questions

No. Only whitespace, line breaks and list markers are touched. The words, their order and their capitalisation come through exactly as you wrote them.
