The Accent Converter turns shorthand into real accented characters — type "cafe'" and get "café" — using the convention international keyboard layouts use, where the accent follows the letter. A picker covers every accented Latin character, and the reverse conversion strips them back out.
Typing "café" on a keyboard with no accent key is a nuisance that recurs constantly for anyone writing about food, music, names or anywhere in continental Europe. The usual workarounds are a character map, a memorised alt code, or giving up.
This converts shorthand into the real characters. Type "cafe'" and get "café", "u:ber" and get "über", "espan~ol" and get "español" — the convention used by several international keyboard layouts, where the accent follows the letter. There is also a picker covering every accented Latin character, grouped by base letter, and the reverse conversion for when you need to strip accents back out for a URL or a legacy system.
The accent follows the letter, which is how the US-International layout already works.
Every accented Latin character grouped by base letter, including carons, ogoneks and rings.
Add accents, or strip them for a URL, a filename or an older system.
Genuine characters, correct in any application rather than a lookalike.
The page explains how to do this natively on Windows and macOS, for when that is better.
Put the accent mark after the letter — e' gives é, u: gives ü, n~ gives ñ.
Every accented Latin character, grouped by its base letter, one click to insert.
Strip accents back out for a URL, a filename or an older system.
Real Unicode characters, correct in any application.
The accent follows the letter: apostrophe for acute (e' gives é), backtick for grave (e` gives è), caret for circumflex (e^ gives ê), colon for diaeresis (u: gives ü), tilde for tilde (n~ gives ñ) and comma for cedilla (c, gives ç).
On Mac, hold the letter key for a menu of accented forms. On Windows, the US-International keyboard layout works the same way as this shorthand. This tool is for when neither is set up.
The shorthand covers the common European accents. The picker covers the full Latin Extended blocks, including Czech carons, Polish ogoneks, Scandinavian rings and the Turkish dotless i.
For a URL slug, a filename or an old system that cannot store non-ASCII characters. The Remove Accents tool does that job specifically, and converts rather than deletes.
