About the Sales Commission Calculator
Flat commission is easy arithmetic. Tiered commission is where people start disagreeing, because the higher rate normally applies only to the sales above each threshold, not to the whole total — a distinction worth thousands of dollars at the end of a good quarter.

For a flat plan, Commission = Total sales × Commission rate ÷ 100. $85,000 in sales at 5% pays $4,250.
Each band pays its own rate on the portion of sales that falls inside it. On $85,000 with 4% up to $50,000 and 6% above, the payout is $2,000 on the first $50,000 plus $2,100 on the remaining $35,000 — $4,100 in total.
Total commission divided by total sales, expressed as a percentage. It is the single number that makes tiered plans comparable with flat ones — the $4,100 example above works out at an effective rate of about 4.8%.
No. Some plans are retroactive, applying the top rate reached to every dollar sold rather than only the portion above the threshold. This calculator uses the more common band-by-band method, so check your plan documents before relying on the figure.
