Converted on your device — the video is never uploaded
The MP4 to WebM Converter produces a smaller, royalty-free WebM for your own website, with bitrate, resolution and frame rate control.
For video on your own website, WebM is usually the better file: smaller than H.264 at the same quality, royalty-free, and supported by every modern browser. Getting one normally means installing ffmpeg.
The conversion runs in your browser through ffmpeg.wasm — the real ffmpeg, compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded: a wedding video, a client recording or an unreleased track never leaves your machine. The engine is a one-off download of about 32 MB, after which your browser caches it and every later conversion starts immediately.
Choose the video bitrate for the resolution you are targeting, scale the picture down, change the frame rate, trim to a section or remove the audio. The usual advice for a web page still applies and is repeated on the tool: offer the WebM first and an MP4 after it, and every browser will pick the one it can play — older Safari and most televisions still need the MP4.
VP8 and VP9 beat H.264 on size, and are royalty-free.
Presets that match 1080p, 720p and 480p.
The page explains why you should still offer an MP4 alongside.
Give a start time and a length to take just the part you need.
ffmpeg runs inside the browser tab, so the file never leaves your computer.
MOV, MKV and AVI work as well.
1000 kb/s suits 720p, 2000 kb/s suits 1080p.
The single biggest saving for web video.
Offer it alongside an MP4.
At the same visual quality, usually yes — VP9 more so than VP8. It is also royalty-free, which matters if you are serving a lot of video.
Chrome, Firefox, Edge and recent Safari. Older Safari, most smart TVs and many apps do not, which is why offering an MP4 alongside is still the right thing.
VP8 encoding is more computationally expensive than H.264, and this runs in a browser tab. Scaling the video down first helps a great deal.
Put two source elements inside your video tag — the WebM first, the MP4 second. The browser takes the first one it understands.
