Check EU and UK VAT numbers on invoices — format and check digit, country by country.
The Invoice VAT Number Validator checks EU and UK VAT numbers in bulk against the format each country uses and the published check-digit rule where there is one, and says plainly where a country publishes no algorithm at all.
A wrong VAT number on an invoice is expensive in both directions. As the seller, an invalid customer VAT number means a zero-rated intra-community supply you cannot justify, and the VAT becomes yours to pay. As the buyer, an invalid supplier number can cost you the input VAT you reclaimed.
This checks a number, or a whole column of them, against the format its country actually uses — Germany’s nine digits, the Netherlands’ nine digits with a B and two more, Ireland’s mixed letters, the UK’s nine or twelve — and then against the published check-digit rule where the country has one. Several member states publish no algorithm, and the result says so rather than pretending.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to VIES or anywhere else, which also means this cannot tell you who a number belongs to: for that, check it in VIES or HMRC’s service and keep the consultation number.
All EU member states, the UK and XI.
Where the rule is published and stable.
A column of customers in one go.
EL for Greece, XI for Northern Ireland.
VIES confirms ownership; this catches typos.
With their country prefix — GB, DE, FR, IE and so on.
For numbers written without the prefix.
Format, check digit, and what that does and does not prove.
For the ones you are about to zero-rate.
No — VIES is an online service and this tool never sends your data anywhere. It checks the format and check digit locally, which catches typos; VIES confirms the number is registered and to whom.
Greek VAT numbers use the prefix EL, although the country code is GR. Both are accepted here.
XI numbers are used for goods traded between Northern Ireland and the EU, and follow the UK format. XI is accepted.
Almost always a typo: a transposed pair, an O typed for a zero. Ask the supplier to confirm the number, and check the invoice against their letterhead.
