The Invoice Reference Number Generator creates payment references with check digits — ISO 11649 RF creditor references, Norwegian KID, Finnish references and Luhn mod-10 — and validates a reference a customer has quoted.
An invoice number identifies an invoice. A payment reference identifies a payment — and in much of Europe it carries a check digit, so a bank can reject a mistyped reference at the moment it is entered rather than letting a payment arrive that nobody can match.
This generates the reference formats that matter. The ISO 11649 RF creditor reference, the international structured reference usable in any SEPA transfer, with its mod-97 check digits. The Norwegian KID number with its mod-10 or mod-11 check digit. The Finnish national reference with its 7-3-1 weighted check digit. And a plain Luhn mod-10 check digit for your own reference schemes.
Enter the base — usually the invoice number or a customer and invoice combination — and it produces the reference in the correct format and grouping. It also validates an existing reference, which is how you check a reference a customer has quoted.
The ISO 11649 format any SEPA transfer can carry.
Mod-10 or mod-11, as Norwegian banks validate.
The 7-3-1 weighted national format.
Check a reference before you chase a payment.
Printed in the blocks banks expect.
RF creditor reference, Norwegian KID, Finnish reference or Luhn.
Usually the invoice number, or a customer number plus the invoice number.
Correctly grouped for printing on the invoice.
Paste a reference a customer quoted to check its check digit.
An international structured payment reference defined by ISO 11649. It starts with RF, two check digits and up to 21 characters, and can be used in any SEPA credit transfer so the payment arrives with a reference the bank has already validated.
So a mistyped reference is rejected when it is entered rather than accepted and left for somebody to match by hand. It is what makes automatic reconciliation reliable.
The Norwegian customer identification number used on invoices, ending in a mod-10 or mod-11 check digit. Norwegian banks validate it, and payments with a valid KID reconcile automatically.
It can be built from it, but it is a different thing. The invoice number identifies the document; the reference is what the payment carries so it can be matched to that document.
