About the Invoice Line Item Extractor

The header of an invoice is easy; the table in the middle is where extraction gets hard. A PDF stores text in drawing order, not reading order, so an invoice table arrives as a column of descriptions followed by a column of numbers with nothing joining them up.

This reassembles the rows by position, then recognises which are items by the shape every invoice table shares: words, then two to four figures, the last of which is the line total. Both column orders are handled — description-first, and the quantity-first style common in the US — and rows that are really dates, labels or totals are filtered out rather than arriving as phantom items with a quantity of 2026.

Every row is multiplied out and checked: quantity times price against the line total. A row that does not reconcile is kept and flagged rather than dropped, because a wrong row you can see beats a missing row nobody notices. Export as CSV or JSON.
