Quick Tool Overview

The AUD builder puts the ABN where it belongs, because an invoice without one obliges the payer to withhold 47%. GST is 10%, the document is titled a tax invoice only if you are registered, and payment fields carry a BSB and account number.

About the Invoice in AUD

The ABN is the thing that matters most on an Australian invoice. If you supply a business and do not quote an Australian Business Number, the payer is required to withhold 47% of the payment and send it to the ATO — so an invoice without an ABN does not just get queried, it gets less than half paid.

GST is a flat 10% on most supplies, with GST-free and input-taxed categories for food, health, education, exports and financial services. Registration is compulsory above the turnover threshold, and a document can only be called a tax invoice if you are registered. Above a set amount the invoice must also carry the buyer’s identity, so a large B2B invoice needs their name or ABN as well as yours.

Payment is by bank transfer to a six-digit BSB and an account number, usually through the New Payments Platform, and PayID is increasingly common for smaller amounts. Terms of 14 days are more usual in Australia than the 30 days common elsewhere.

How to use the Invoice in AUD

  1. 1

    Quote your ABN

Without it the payer must withhold 47%. It is the single most important field.

  2. 2

    Call it a tax invoice

Only if you are registered for GST. Otherwise it is just an invoice, with no GST line.

  3. 3

    Set GST at 10%

Or mark GST-free lines at zero where food, health, education or exports apply.

  4. 4

    Add the buyer’s details

Required above a set value — their name or ABN, not just yours.

  5. 5

Give a BSB and account number

And a PayID if you use one for smaller payments.

Frequently asked questions

The payer is legally required to withhold 47% of the payment and remit it to the ATO, unless you give them a completed Statement by a Supplier explaining why you are not required to quote one. In practice, quote the ABN.
