A Code 128 or Code 39 barcode of the invoice number, for scanning and filing.
The Invoice Barcode Generator encodes an invoice number as Code 128 or Code 39 with the number printed underneath, checks it can be encoded, and warns when it would be too wide for an invoice header.
A barcode on an invoice is not for the customer — it is for whoever processes it. Accounts payable departments that scan paper invoices, document archives that index by number, and warehouses that match an invoice to a delivery all read a barcode faster and more reliably than a person can type an invoice number.
This generates the two symbologies that suit invoice numbers. Code 128, which encodes letters, digits and punctuation densely and is what most modern scanners expect. And Code 39, which is wider but readable by older scanners and is still common in document management systems. The human-readable number prints underneath.
It checks that the number can be encoded in the chosen symbology and warns when a barcode would be too wide to fit an invoice header. Download as SVG for print or PNG for a document. Nothing is uploaded.
Dense, and read by virtually every modern scanner.
For older document management systems.
The number printed under the bars.
Before it is too wide to fit where it is going.
Crisp at any print size.
Letters, digits and dashes all encode in Code 128.
Code 128 for modern scanners, Code 39 for older document systems.
Height and width to fit where it will be printed.
SVG for print, PNG for a document.
Code 128. It encodes the full range of characters invoice numbers use, it is compact, and virtually every modern scanner reads it. Use Code 39 only if an older system requires it.
Not in its standard form — it encodes uppercase letters, digits and a handful of symbols. Lowercase is converted to uppercase, which is usually fine for invoice numbers.
Top right near the invoice number, or in a margin, with a quiet zone of white space on both sides. A barcode crammed against other content will not scan.
For a payment, yes. For indexing and filing, a linear barcode is simpler, faster to scan with a handheld reader and supported by more document systems.
