Generate a unique geometric avatar from any string.
Identicon
The Identicon Generator turns any string into a symmetric geometric avatar, the way GitHub does. The pattern is derived deterministically from a hash, so the same input always gives the same image on any device — which makes it both a default avatar and a visual fingerprint the eye can compare faster than a hash.
An identicon turns a string into a small symmetric pattern. GitHub made them familiar as default avatars, but their real use is visual fingerprinting: two identicons that look different mean two different values, which the eye spots faster than reading a hash.
The generation is deterministic, so the same input always produces the same image on any device with nothing stored. The classic five-by-five mirrored grid is here alongside a few other styles, with adjustable grid size, palette and background. A batch mode takes a list of strings and returns a ZIP, which is how a set of demo users or a fingerprint sheet gets made.
The same string always produces the same image, on every device, with nothing stored anywhere.
Mirroring is what makes the pattern read as a deliberate shape rather than as static, and keeps it memorable.
The classic five-by-five grid plus other geometric arrangements, with adjustable grid size.
A pasted list of strings becomes a ZIP, which is how a set of demo users or a fingerprint sheet gets made.
The colour still comes from the hash, but from a palette you choose rather than a fixed one.
A username, an email, an ID, a hash — anything.
The classic mirrored grid, or one of the other geometric styles.
A five-by-five grid is the standard; more squares means more detail.
One image, or a ZIP from a pasted list of strings.
A default avatar that is unique per user without anyone uploading anything, and a visual fingerprint — spotting that two patterns differ is much faster than comparing two hashes by eye.
Yes. The pattern is derived deterministically from a hash of the string, so it is identical on every device and needs nothing stored.
Mirroring makes them read as a deliberate shape rather than as static, which is what makes them memorable and easy to tell apart at small sizes.
In principle, since a five-by-five grid has a finite number of patterns. In practice collisions are rare enough not to matter for avatars, though this is not a security mechanism.
