Quick Tool Overview

The GIF to MP4 Converter re-records an animated GIF as video, typically a tenth to a twentieth of the size and better looking, because video codecs store the difference between frames and are not stuck with 256 colours. The video tag markup that makes a video loop and autoplay like a GIF is supplied alongside.

About the GIF to MP4 Converter

GIF stores every frame as a separate 256-colour image with no motion compression at all, which is why a three-second clip can run to eight megabytes. The same clip as video is usually under half a megabyte and looks better.

The GIF is decoded frame by frame in the browser and re-recorded from a canvas using the built-in media encoder. WebM is produced everywhere; MP4 is offered where the browser supports writing it, which Safari and recent Chrome do. Because a video does not autoplay-loop the way a GIF does, the tool also gives you the video tag markup with the right autoplay, muted, loop and playsinline attributes to drop into a page.

Key features of the GIF to MP4 Converter

Dramatic size reduction

An eight megabyte GIF commonly becomes a few hundred kilobytes of video carrying the same motion.

Embed markup included

The video tag with autoplay, muted, loop and playsinline is generated, which is what makes a video behave like a GIF.

WebM everywhere, MP4 where possible

WebM is produced in every browser; H.264 MP4 where the browser can encode it.

Reads the GIF properly

Frame count and duration are taken from the file, so the video matches the original timing rather than guessing.

Recorded locally

The capture uses the browser's media encoder, so nothing is uploaded at any point.
