Expand Image Canvas grows the frame while leaving the picture at its original size, and a nine-point anchor decides where the original sits inside the new space. Anchor left and the room appears on the right; anchor centre and it is shared evenly. That control is what makes space for a caption or a logo without touching the photograph.
Canvas size and image size are different things, and confusing them is the reason people accidentally stretch photographs. Changing the canvas gives you a bigger frame; the picture inside it stays exactly the size it was.
Type the new canvas dimensions, then place the original with a nine-point anchor — centre, any corner, any edge. That anchor is what makes this different from padding: you can extend a canvas to the right only, leaving the photograph flush against the left edge, which is how you make room for a caption or a logo. The new area can be transparent or any colour.
Place the original in any corner, edge or the centre, so the new space appears exactly where you need it.
Nothing is scaled or resampled — the photograph keeps every pixel it had and the frame changes around it.
A smaller canvas crops from the anchored position, which is a precise way to trim a fixed amount from one side.
Leave the new area transparent for PNG, or give it any background colour.
Canvas size and image size are shown separately, so the distinction that trips people up stays visible.
The current canvas size is shown so you know what you are growing from.

Resizing scales the picture itself, changing how big everything in it appears. Expanding the canvas leaves every pixel of the picture at its original size and simply adds empty space around it.
The image is cropped to the new canvas, anchored where you placed it. That is a legitimate way to trim a fixed amount from one side.
Yes. Leave the fill on transparent and download a PNG. Choosing JPEG will fill it with the background colour instead, since JPEG cannot store transparency.
It decides which direction the canvas grows in. Anchor to the left edge and all the new space appears on the right; anchor to the centre and it is shared evenly on all sides.
