Quick Tool Overview

The Image Perspective Tool maps a trapezoid back to a rectangle. Drag the four handles onto the corners of whatever should be square — a page, a whiteboard, a building face — and the region between them is warped straight. It is a real projective transform done in small triangles, so straight lines stay straight rather than bowing.

What it does

You give it
A photo taken at an angle, and four corners
You get back

About the Image Perspective Tool

Photograph a whiteboard, a document or a building from anywhere but dead centre and the rectangle in front of you becomes a trapezoid in the file. Perspective correction maps that trapezoid back to a rectangle.

Drag the four handles onto the corners of whatever should be square — the page, the board, the facade — and the tool warps the region between them into a true rectangle. The transform is a real projective mapping done in small triangles on a canvas, not a simple stretch, so straight lines in the original stay straight in the result. The output aspect ratio can be forced when you know it, which is what makes A4 pages come out genuinely A4.

Key features of the Image Perspective Tool

Four-corner drag

Place the handles on the real corners of the subject; no numbers to work out and no trial and error.

True projective warp

The mapping is computed properly and applied in small triangles, so lines that were straight stay straight.

Force an output ratio

Set A4, letter, 16:9 or a custom shape and the corrected region lands in exactly that rectangle.

Works on scans too

A page photographed on a desk comes out looking like it was scanned flat.

Entirely local

Documents are the main use, and they are exactly the files you should not be uploading.

How to use the Image Perspective Tool

  1. 1

    Load the photo

A document, whiteboard or building shot from an angle.

  2. 2

    Drag the four handles

Put each one on a corner of the thing that ought to be rectangular.

  3. 3

    Set the output shape

Leave it automatic, or force a ratio such as A4 or 16:9 when you know what it should be.

  4. 4

    Download the corrected image

The selected region is flattened into a straight-on rectangle.

Frequently asked questions

The trapezoid shape you get when the camera is not parallel to a flat subject — the near edge is wider than the far one. It is most obvious on projected slides, documents and tall buildings.
