Quick Tool Overview

The Brightness and Contrast Editor puts gamma alongside the two obvious controls, because gamma is usually the one you actually want — it lifts midtones without lifting the blacks. Separate highlight and shadow recovery and a live histogram mean clipping is visible as it happens rather than discovered later on a better screen.

About the Brightness and Contrast Editor

Brightness and contrast are the two controls everyone reaches for and the two that most often make a photograph worse, because raising brightness lifts the blacks and flattens the image at the same time as it fixes the exposure.

Gamma is usually the control you actually want: it lightens the midtones while leaving the black and white points alone, which is what recovers an underexposed photograph without washing it out. All three are here, along with separate highlight and shadow recovery, and a live histogram underneath so you can see clipping happen rather than discovering it later on a better screen.

Key features of the Brightness and Contrast Editor

Gamma, not just brightness

Lifts the midtones while leaving black and white points alone, which recovers an underexposed photo without washing it out.

Live histogram

Shows the tonal distribution as you drag, so clipped shadows and blown highlights are visible immediately.

Highlight and shadow recovery

Separate controls for the two ends of the range, which is where the detail worth saving usually is.

Explains what it is doing

The page is clear about why brightness flattens an image and gamma does not.

Non-destructive until you save

Every control works from the original pixels, so adjustments never compound as you experiment.

How to use the Brightness and Contrast Editor

  1. 1

    Load the photo

The histogram shows how the tones are currently distributed.

  2. 2

    Try gamma first

It lifts the midtones without lifting the blacks, which is usually what an underexposed photo needs.

  3. 3

    Then contrast

Watch the histogram edges — when they hit the walls, detail is being lost.

  4. 4

    Recover the ends

Pull the highlights down and the shadows up to bring back clipped detail.

Frequently asked questions

Brightness adds the same amount to every pixel, which lifts blacks to grey. Gamma applies a curve that moves midtones much more than the extremes, so blacks stay black and the picture stays punchy.
