The YouTube Thumbnail Maker builds a 1280 by 720 thumbnail around the constraint that matters: it is almost never seen at that size. Text defaults to sizes that survive being shrunk to sidebar width, and a preview strip shows the result at sidebar, search and mobile sizes together.
A YouTube thumbnail is 1280 by 720 pixels and is almost never seen at that size. In a sidebar it is around 168 pixels wide, which means text at 40 pixels in your design is five pixels on screen and completely unreadable.
That constraint drives everything here. The text tools default to sizes that survive the reduction, with heavy weights and a thick outline, and a preview strip shows the thumbnail at sidebar, search and mobile sizes side by side so you can see what actually reads. Background photo, gradient or flat colour, plus a duration badge and the safe margin YouTube's own timestamp overlays.
Sidebar, search and mobile widths side by side, which is the only honest test of whether a thumbnail reads.
Defaults to the weight and size that survive being reduced to 168 pixels wide.
What keeps text legible over a busy video frame, on by default rather than an afterthought.
The bottom-right corner YouTube overlays with the timestamp is marked.
1280 by 720, 16:9, exported under the 2 MB limit so it is never rejected.
A frame from the video, a gradient, or a flat colour.
Three or four words. The default size is what survives being shrunk to sidebar width.
Sidebar, search and mobile sizes are shown together — that is the real test.
Under 2 MB, which is YouTube's limit.
1280 by 720 pixels, 16:9, under 2 MB, as JPEG or PNG. That is the specification; anything else is resized or rejected.
Enormous. A thumbnail is shown at around 168 pixels wide in a sidebar, so text needs to be at least 90 pixels in the 1280-wide design to be legible there.
Three or four. The title is already next to the thumbnail, so the text should add something rather than repeat it, and long text becomes unreadable when shrunk.
Bottom right, overlaid by YouTube itself. Keep that corner clear, which the safe-margin overlay marks.
