About the WAV to MP3 Converter

WAV files are enormous — about 10 MB a minute in CD-quality stereo — because nothing in them is compressed. That is right for recording and editing and hopeless for sending: email attachments bounce, upload sites cap the size, and a one-hour recording is well over half a gigabyte.

The conversion runs in your browser through ffmpeg.wasm — the real ffmpeg, compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded: a wedding video, a client recording or an unreleased track never leaves your machine. The engine is a one-off download of about 32 MB, after which your browser caches it and every later conversion starts immediately.

The encoder is LAME, the same one desktop tools use. Choose a constant bitrate when the size has to be predictable, or variable bitrate for better quality at the same size — V2 sounds better than a flat 192 kb/s and usually comes out smaller. Resample, force mono, trim to a section, or apply broadcast loudness normalisation on the way through.
