About the FLAC to MP3 Converter

A FLAC library is the right way to keep music: lossless, compressed, an exact copy of the disc. It is also far too large for a phone, unplayable on plenty of hardware, and an awkward thing to send to anyone. The usual answer is to keep the FLAC as the master and make MP3s from it.

The conversion runs in your browser through ffmpeg.wasm — the real ffmpeg, compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded: a wedding video, a client recording or an unreleased track never leaves your machine. The engine is a one-off download of about 32 MB, after which your browser caches it and every later conversion starts immediately.

Because FLAC is lossless, this is a first-generation encode — the best-sounding MP3 you can make of that recording. 320 kb/s is the default for a library; lower bitrates are there when size matters more. An album at FLAC is typically 250 to 400 MB and comes out around 90 MB at 320 kb/s. ALAC, WAV and APE files can be dropped in as well.
