Quick Tool Overview

The Timestamp Converter turns a Unix timestamp into a readable date in UTC, in your local zone and as an ISO 8601 string, and converts a date back into a timestamp. Seconds and milliseconds are detected automatically, which is what stops you landing in 1970 or in the year 55000.

What it does

You give it
A timestamp in seconds or milliseconds, or a date

About the Timestamp Converter

A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since midnight UTC on 1 January 1970. It is how most systems store a moment in time, because it is a single number with no time zone or formatting ambiguity — and it is completely unreadable to a human.

Paste a timestamp to see it as a date in UTC, in your local zone, and as an ISO 8601 string, along with how long ago it was. Go the other way and pick a date to get the timestamp. Seconds and milliseconds are both detected automatically, which matters because JavaScript works in milliseconds while most backends work in seconds — mixing them up produces dates in 1970 or in the year 55000. A live clock shows the current timestamp for quick reference.

Key features of the Timestamp Converter

Seconds and milliseconds detected

JavaScript works in milliseconds while most backends work in seconds, and mixing them up is the classic source of nonsense dates.

Three date formats at once

UTC, your local time zone and ISO 8601 are shown together, so you can copy whichever the system you are debugging expects.

Relative time

How long ago the timestamp was, which is usually the first thing you want to know from a log line.

Conversion both ways

Pick a date and get the timestamp, or paste a timestamp and get the date.

Live current timestamp

A ticking clock shows the timestamp right now for quick reference.

How to use the Timestamp Converter

  1. 1

    Paste a timestamp

Enter an epoch value in seconds or milliseconds. The unit is detected from the length.

  2. 2

    Read the dates

The moment is shown in UTC, in your local time zone, as ISO 8601, and as a relative time.

  3. 3

    Or convert a date

Use the second panel to pick a date and time and get the matching timestamp.

Frequently asked questions

Current timestamps in seconds are 10 digits; in milliseconds they are 13. The tool checks the length and tells you which it used.
