About the CSV Delimiter Converter

A CSV that opens perfectly on one computer lands in a single column on another. The reason is almost always the separator: Excel in much of Europe writes and expects semicolons, because the comma is already doing duty as the decimal point, while importers and APIs nearly always want commas.

This reads the file with whichever delimiter it actually uses — detected automatically — and writes it out with the one you need, re-quoting fields as required. It can also switch the decimal style at the same time, turning 1.234,56 into 1234.56 or the reverse, which is the other half of the same problem. Quoted fields containing commas, quotes or line breaks are preserved exactly, and ragged rows are padded so the grid stays square.

Key features of the CSV Delimiter Converter

Detects what you have

The delimiter is found by column-count consistency, not by counting characters.

Decimal style too

Convert 1.234,56 to 1234.56 or back, leaving text values untouched.

Quoting rebuilt

Fields are re-quoted for the new delimiter so nothing splits in the wrong place.

Warns about bad combinations

Comma decimals inside a comma-separated file are flagged before you download.

Right extension

The download becomes .tsv or .csv to match the delimiter you chose.

How to use the CSV Delimiter Converter

  1. 1

    Paste or drop the file

Leave the input delimiter on detect unless the file is unusual.

  2. 2

    Choose the delimiter you need

Comma for importers and APIs, semicolon for European Excel, tab for pasting into sheets.

  3. 3

    Fix the decimals if needed

Convert 1,50 to 1.50 or the other way round, leaving text values alone.

  4. 4

    Copy or download the result

The file extension follows the delimiter you picked.

Frequently asked questions

By reading the first lines and choosing the candidate that gives the same column count on every one of them. Consistency is a far better signal than simply counting characters.
