This year's RMD
—
The RMD Calculator divides your prior year-end balance by the IRS life expectancy factor for your age to give the required minimum distribution, and projects future years so the rising percentage — and its tax impact — is visible in advance.
Once you reach the required beginning age, tax-deferred retirement accounts must pay out a minimum amount every year. Enter your prior year-end balance and your age and the calculator divides by the IRS life expectancy factor to give the required distribution.
The factor falls as you age, so the required percentage rises every year: a little under four percent at the start, climbing steadily through your seventies and eighties. That matters for tax planning, because distributions are taxable income and a large balance can push you into a higher bracket or affect other means-tested amounts. The calculator projects future RMDs so the trajectory is visible in advance, while there is still time to plan around it.
The Uniform Lifetime table, and the joint table when a spouse is more than ten years younger.
Under four percent at the start and climbing every year, which is what makes tax planning necessary.
Future RMDs on a projected balance, so a bracket problem is visible while there is still time.
Aggregate IRA balances to compute the total requirement, which can be taken from any of them.
What happens if a distribution is missed, and that prompt correction reduces the charge.
The account value on 31 December of the previous year, which is what the calculation uses.
Your age at the end of the distribution year, which sets the life expectancy factor.
The Uniform Lifetime table, or the joint table if your spouse is more than ten years younger.
See how the required percentage rises with age so you can plan the tax impact.
The minimum amount that must be withdrawn each year from tax-deferred retirement accounts once you reach the required beginning age. It exists because those accounts deferred tax, and the tax eventually has to be paid.
Divide the prior year-end account balance by the life expectancy factor for your age from the IRS tables. The factor shrinks as you age, so the required percentage of the balance rises every year.
A penalty applies on the amount not taken, which has historically been severe though recent legislation reduced it and allows further reduction for prompt correction. Taking a missed distribution quickly and filing the correction form is the right response.
Roth IRAs do not during the owner lifetime, which is one of their advantages. Inherited accounts follow separate rules, and those changed significantly with recent legislation, so check the current position for any account you inherit.
