About the Savings Calculator

Enter a starting balance, a monthly deposit, an interest rate and a period to see what the account grows to, split into the money you saved and the interest it earned. Switch modes and it works backwards from a target instead.

Compounding is the whole point and it is easy to underestimate, because growth is not linear. For the first several years the balance is mostly your own deposits; the interest column only starts to dominate after a decade or more, and then it accelerates. That shape is why starting earlier beats saving more later, and the calculator shows the year-by-year breakdown rather than a single final figure, so the crossover point where interest overtakes contributions is visible.

Key features of the Savings Calculator

Target mode

Work backwards from the amount you need and the date you need it, to the monthly deposit required.

The crossover point

The year interest starts contributing more than you do, which is the whole case for starting early.

Compounding frequency

Daily, monthly, quarterly or annual, with the effective annual rate reported alongside.

Real terms option

Subtract inflation to see what the balance will actually buy, not just what it will say.

Yearly breakdown table

Balance, deposits and interest for every year, rather than a single final number.

How to use the Savings Calculator

  1. 1

Enter what you have and add

A starting balance and the amount you deposit each month or year.

  2. 2

    Set the rate and period

The annual interest rate, the compounding frequency and how long you will save for.

  3. 3

    Or work from a target

Switch modes to find the monthly deposit needed to reach a specific amount by a date.

  4. 4

    Read the yearly breakdown

See when interest starts to outweigh your own contributions, which is the point of saving early.

Frequently asked questions

Interest is added to the balance and then earns interest itself. The effect is small early and large late, which is why the growth curve steepens over time rather than rising in a straight line.
