Distance Calculator

Distance from speed and time, or between two map coordinates.

From speed and time

The everyday journey calculation.

Between two coordinates

Great-circle distance in decimal degrees. South and west are negative.

Kilometres—
Miles—
Nautical miles—
Initial bearing—

This is the straight-line distance over the surface of the Earth. Driving routes are typically 20–40% longer. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

Quick Tool Overview

The Distance Calculator works two ways: distance from speed and time for an everyday journey, and the straight-line distance between two latitude and longitude points using the haversine formula. It also gives the initial bearing between the coordinates.

What it does
Calculates distance from speed and time, or between two coordinates
You give it
A speed and time, or two latitude/longitude pairs
You get back
The distance, plus the initial compass bearing for coordinates
Best for
Journey planning, mapping, sailing and geo work

About the Distance Calculator

Two ways to get a distance. The first is from speed and time, the everyday journey calculation. The second is the straight-line distance between two points given as latitude and longitude, worked out with the haversine formula on a spherical Earth.

The coordinate distance is the great-circle distance, sometimes called as-the-crow-flies. It is always shorter than a road or flight route, and the gap widens over long distances and around geography. It also runs the initial bearing between the two points, which is the compass direction you would set off on. Everything is computed in your browser, so no location data is sent anywhere.

Key features of the Distance Calculator

Haversine great-circle distance

The straight-line distance on a spherical Earth, which is the correct method for latitude and longitude.

Initial bearing

The compass direction you would set off on, calculated alongside the distance.

Clear about as-the-crow-flies

Great-circle distance is always shorter than a road or flight route, and the gap widens over long distances.

Everyday mode too

Distance from speed and time for the ordinary journey calculation, in the same tool.

No location data sent

Everything is computed in your browser, so coordinates never leave your device.

How to use the Distance Calculator

  1. 1

    Calculate from speed and time

Enter an average speed and a duration to get the distance covered.

  2. 2

    Or enter two coordinates

Type the latitude and longitude of each point in decimal degrees.

  3. 3

    Read the distance and bearing

The great-circle distance is shown in kilometres, miles and nautical miles, with the initial bearing.

Frequently asked questions

A formula for the great-circle distance between two points on a sphere from their latitudes and longitudes. It is accurate to within about half a percent for the Earth, which is not a perfect sphere.
