Quick Tool Overview

The Annuity Payout Calculator runs accumulation in reverse: the income a lump sum can pay, or how long a chosen withdrawal lasts. Withdrawals can be indexed to inflation, and a capital-preservation mode draws only the growth.

About the Annuity Payout Calculator

This is the accumulation question in reverse: not what payments grow into, but what income a pot can produce. Enter the lump sum, the return you expect and the number of years, and the calculator returns the regular payment that would exhaust it exactly at the end.

It also runs the other direction. Enter a withdrawal you want to take and it returns how long the money lasts, which is the more useful mode in retirement planning. Two options change the answer significantly: indexing withdrawals to inflation, which is realistic and shortens the life of the pot considerably, and preserving the capital, where you draw only the growth so the income continues indefinitely at a lower level.

Key features of the Annuity Payout Calculator

Solves in both directions

Income from a term, or term from an income — the second being the question retirees actually ask.

Inflation indexing

Rising withdrawals are realistic and shorten the pot considerably, so the option is there rather than hidden.

Capital preservation mode

Draw only the growth for a lower income that continues indefinitely and leaves the capital intact.

Year-by-year balance

The remaining pot each year, so you can see the decline rather than only its endpoint.

Depletion date reported

A specific year the money runs out, which is easier to plan against than a rate.

How to use the Annuity Payout Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter the lump sum

The starting balance you are drawing from, and the return you expect it to earn.

  2. 2

    Choose what to solve for

The income a fixed term supports, or how long a chosen income lasts.

  3. 3

    Set inflation indexing

Increase withdrawals with inflation for a realistic projection, or hold them flat.

  4. 4

    Try preserving capital

Draw only the growth to get a lower income that continues indefinitely.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the return, the term and whether you spend the capital. Drawing down over a fixed period gives far more income than living on growth alone, but the money ends at a known date.
