Slope (m)

Direction and steepness of the line
Slope is rise over run: the change in y divided by the change in x. A vertical line has an undefined slope because the run is zero, and a horizontal line has a slope of exactly zero. The perpendicular slope is the negative reciprocal.
The Slope Calculator finds the gradient between two points and everything that normally follows in the same question: the line in slope-intercept and standard form, the angle of inclination, the distance between the points, their midpoint and the perpendicular slope.
Enter two points and get the slope between them, together with everything that normally follows in the same question: the line in slope-intercept and standard form, the angle it makes with the horizontal, the distance between the points and their midpoint.
Slope is rise over run — the change in y divided by the change in x — and its sign and size tell you the direction and steepness of the line. Two cases are worth watching for: a vertical line has an undefined slope because the run is zero, and a horizontal line has a slope of exactly zero. The perpendicular slope, which is the negative reciprocal, is shown as well, since it is what the next part of the question usually asks for.
Line equation, angle, distance, midpoint and perpendicular slope, because the next part of the question usually wants them.
Rise over run is shown in lowest terms as well as as a decimal.
An undefined slope is reported as undefined, with the reason, rather than as an error or infinity.
Slope-intercept and standard form, since different courses ask for different ones.

Rise over run as a decimal and a fraction, with the substitution shown.
Line equation, angle, distance, midpoint and the perpendicular slope are all calculated too.
Slope m equals (y₂ − y₁) divided by (x₂ − x₁) — the change in y over the change in x, often remembered as rise over run.
It means the line is vertical. Both points share the same x coordinate, so the run is zero and the division is undefined. A horizontal line, by contrast, has a slope of exactly zero.
Take the negative reciprocal. A slope of 2 gives a perpendicular slope of −1/2. A horizontal line is perpendicular to a vertical one, which is the case where the reciprocal is undefined.
The angle of inclination is the arctangent of the slope. A slope of 1 gives 45 degrees, and a slope of 0.577 gives 30 degrees.
