Roughly what the net burn is worth in food
Calories per minute are MET × 3.5 × weight in kilograms ÷ 200, using values from the Compendium of Physical Activities. This is a population average: individual error of 20 to 30 percent is normal, and fitness trackers are no more accurate. Use the net figure for weight-loss arithmetic.
The Calories Burned Calculator estimates the energy cost of an activity from your body weight, the activity and its duration, using MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities. Both gross and net figures are given, since only the net one belongs in weight-loss maths.
Estimate how many calories an activity burned from your body weight, the activity itself and how long it lasted. The calculation uses MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities, the reference table exercise science actually uses.
A MET is a multiple of resting metabolic rate: an activity rated at 8 METs uses roughly eight times the energy of sitting still. That makes the arithmetic simple and transparent, but it also means the answer is a population average rather than a measurement of you. Body composition, fitness, technique and terrain all move the real figure, and fitness trackers disagree with each other by twenty percent or more on the same session, so treat any number here as an estimate to compare against itself over time.
Activities are rated from the Compendium of Physical Activities, the reference table exercise science actually uses.
The net figure removes the resting calories you would have burned anyway, which is the honest number for a calorie deficit.
Walking, running, cycling, swimming, weights, team sports and housework, each with its own intensity level.
The page states the 20 to 30 percent individual error rather than presenting a population average as a measurement.
Kilograms or pounds — body weight is the main driver of the result.

How many minutes you spent doing it.
Total calories, calories per minute, and the net figure once resting expenditure is removed.
Calories per minute equal the activity MET value multiplied by 3.5, multiplied by body weight in kilograms, divided by 200. Multiply by the number of minutes for the total.
A metabolic equivalent of task: the ratio of an activity energy cost to resting energy cost. One MET is sitting quietly, and about 3.5 millilitres of oxygen per kilogram per minute.
It is a population average with an error easily reaching 20 to 30 percent for an individual. Fitness trackers are not better; they simply disagree with confidence.
For weight-loss maths, yes. The net figure removes the roughly one MET you would have spent resting for that time, and the calculator shows both.
