About the Auto Loan Calculator

Enter the vehicle price, your down payment and trade-in, the rate and the term to get the monthly payment, the total interest and the real cost of the car. Sales tax and dealer fees are separate fields because they are usually financed rather than paid in cash.

Two things make car loans more expensive than buyers expect. The first is term creep: seventy-two and eighty-four month loans lower the payment while raising the total paid substantially, and they keep you underwater for longer because a car depreciates faster than the loan amortizes. The second is that tax and fees get rolled into the balance, so you finance them at the loan rate for the whole term. The calculator shows both effects plainly.

Key features of the Auto Loan Calculator

Tax and fees financed correctly

They are usually rolled into the loan, so you pay interest on them for the whole term — and the calculator shows what that costs.

Trade-in handled properly

A trade reduces the amount financed and, in many states, the taxable price too.

Term comparison

Shorten the term and watch the payment rise while total interest falls sharply — the trade-off dealers rarely lead with.

Negative equity flagged

Long terms keep you owing more than the car is worth, and the schedule shows for how long.

Full amortization schedule

Every payment split into principal and interest, so nothing about the loan is hidden.

Frequently asked questions

It lowers the payment but costs considerably more in interest and keeps you owing more than the car is worth for longer. On a seventy-two or eighty-four month loan, negative equity can last most of the term.
