Boxes of flooring to buy

One gallon of paint covers roughly 350 to 400 square feet per coat, and most jobs need two. Flooring waste runs about 10 percent for a straight layout and 15 to 20 percent for diagonal or herringbone, where every edge cut leaves an unusable offcut.

Quick Tool Overview

The Square Footage Calculator measures area for rectangular, L-shaped, circular and triangular spaces in square feet, metres and yards, totals several areas together, and turns the result into flooring boxes or tins of paint once waste is allowed for.

About the Square Footage Calculator

Measure the area of a space in square feet, square metres or square yards, for rectangular rooms, L-shaped rooms, circles, triangles and borders. Several areas can be added together, which is how most real floor plans actually work.

The output is not only an area but a shopping quantity: once you know the square footage, the tool applies a waste allowance and tells you how many boxes of flooring or tins of paint to buy. That allowance is doing real work — cutting a plank to fit an edge wastes the offcut, and diagonal or herringbone layouts waste substantially more, which is why the recommended percentage changes with the pattern you choose.

Key features of the Square Footage Calculator

Five shapes

Rectangle, L-shape, circle, triangle and border, so real floor plans can be measured without splitting them by hand.

Several areas totalled

Add rooms together for a whole-floor figure rather than running the tool repeatedly.

Material quantities

Flooring boxes and paint tins calculated from the area, with a layout-appropriate waste allowance.

Every unit at once

Square feet, square metres and square yards, so you can quote in whichever the supplier uses.

Waste varies by pattern

Diagonal and herringbone layouts waste far more than a straight grid, and the recommendation changes accordingly.

Multiply length by width in feet. A room 12 feet by 10 feet is 120 square feet. For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles and add them.
